OTS Newsletter - Winter 2009Green Rooftops Of all the high schools in Jerusalem, only the Jacob Sapirstein Boys’ High School in Ramot was chosen by the Municipality as a “Green Rooftop” school, and it’s easy to see why. “Our roof is truly a green oasis,” relates school administrator Amichai Braverman. “Lush plants, flowers and trees surround sitting areas and lounging corners, providing our students with a relaxing place to take a respite from their studies and enjoy the magnificent view of Jerusalem.” Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat (pictured, with students) spoke at a special ceremony recognizing the school for its environmental awareness and for taking pride in its appearance, adding that students excel academically in clean, natural surroundings. In fact, says Braverman, the fact that a religious school was awarded the honor is not surprising. “Judaism is concerned with ecology and the environment,” he asserts. “In Massechet Eiruvin is says that a talmid chacham may not live in a city that has no green in it. We view caring for our surroundings as a paramount Torah value.”
