Q & A - WITH RABBI RISKIN

Question: An organization called Dor Yesharim is going to various schools encouraging the students to be genetically tested for a proclivity for Tay Sachs disease and other similar diseases. Is this halakhically permissible?

Answer: Once a woman is already pregnant, and there is a certain risk to the fetus in such genetic testing, I would be reluctant to give a blanket heter for such genetic testing; each case would have to be individually discussed with a halakhic authority. However I do believe that for a student to be aware of his/her genetic proclivity can be very helpful, especially in terms of using such a test as one of the guides towards a proper shidduch. For example if two people know that they have Taysachs proclivities it would not be logical for them to go out seriously.
